HomeGuide’s compressor number is higher because it includes the welding and the refrigerant recharge. Anything that opens the sealed system has to be done by an EPA 608 certified tech, and ours are.

What moves the price

The part. A door gasket and a control board are very different jobs, even on the same fridge.

The type of fridge. Angi lists top-freezer repairs at $100 to $350, French-door at $250 to $600 and built-ins at $300 to $700. A lot of San Francisco Bay Area kitchens have French-door or built-in units, so expect the middle to upper end.

The brand. Whirlpool, GE and Frigidaire parts are easy to get. Sub-Zero, Viking and Thermador parts cost more and take more time. Our techs are factory trained on those brands. On a built-in, a big repair still usually costs far less than replacing the fridge and the cabinet work around it.

Access. A built-in boxed into cabinets takes longer to get into than a freestanding fridge.

Repair or replace?

Angi’s rule of thumb: if the fridge is under 10 years old and the repair costs less than half of a new one, repair it. Angi puts new refrigerators at $1,000 to $3,000, and most standard fridges last 10 to 15 years. We walk through it in more detail in Should I repair or replace my refrigerator?.

Common questions

How much does refrigerator repair cost in the San Francisco Bay Area?
National cost data from Angi puts most refrigerator repairs at $150 to $400, with an average around $275. Built-in and French-door models usually cost more. We give you the exact price after the diagnosis, before any work starts.

Can you give me a price over the phone?
Not an exact one. The same symptom can come from a door gasket or a control board, so we need to see the fridge first. You get the exact price on site before any work starts.

Is a compressor replacement worth it?
It depends on the fridge. HomeGuide lists compressor replacement at $700 to $1,250. On an older standard fridge, that often points to replacement. On a built-in, repair usually makes more sense.

Do you offer discounts on refrigerator repair?
Yes. We have a $25-off coupon, $25 off for new customers, and 10% off labor for seniors. They come off the repair, not the $219 service call. Mention it when you book.

My fridge isn’t cooling. What will that cost?
It depends on the cause. A failed fan motor, defrost heater or thermostat usually falls in the $100 to $250 range nationally. A compressor costs a lot more. Check that the condenser coil is clean and the breaker hasn’t tripped first. Our refrigerator not cooling guide has the safe checks.

My fridge is leaking water. Is that an expensive fix?
Usually not. Leaks often come from a clogged defrost drain, a water line or the dispenser, and a water dispenser repair runs $75 to $200 nationally. See refrigerator leaking water.

What should I tell you when I call?
The brand, the model number and what you’re seeing or hearing: warm sections, water on the floor, clicking, buzzing or an error code. That helps us bring the right parts.

Do you repair commercial refrigerators?
No. We repair refrigerators in homes only, and we don’t do installations.
