Common causes (high level)

Water under a fridge is not always a “bad compressor.” Many Bay Area units drip because the defrost drain is iced shut, the drain pan under the cabinet is cracked or overflowing, or a twist-in water filter was not seated after a change. Ice-maker and dispenser lines can weep at fittings. A warm cabinet that also leaks may be melting heavy frost — pair that with not-cooling diagnosis.

• Cracked, tipped, or overflowing drain pan under the unit
• Loose, cracked, or incompletely seated water filter housing
• Ice-maker fill tube or water-inlet valve drip at the rear
• Door left ajar or failed gasket causing excess frost that later melts

Safe checks you can do before calling

These are observation steps only — not repairs inside live electrical panels, sealed refrigerant circuits, or pressurized water valves under the cabinet:

• Note whether water is under the front toe-kick, behind the fridge, or pooling on an interior shelf.
• Empty and inspect the drip tray or drain pan if your model makes it reachable from the front without tools — do not tip a loaded fridge alone.
• If you recently changed the filter, confirm it is fully locked; wipe dry and watch for a slow seep after a few hours.
• Check that the fridge sits level enough that doors close on their own; wipe crumbs from the gasket.
• Turn off the ice maker at the control if the leak is clearly at the ice room, and catch drips with towels until a tech arrives.

Do not puncture lines, cut into water tubing under pressure, add sealant to refrigerant joints, or open sealed electrical compartments. If you see scorch marks near the water valve, hear constant inlet-valve buzz with floor wetting, or smell burning insulation, shut off the water supply and power if safe and call a pro.
