Water on the kitchen floor or dripping inside the fridge is a call we get a lot. Melted frost, a clogged defrost drain, a loose filter housing or an ice maker line can all leave puddles. Some leaks start with a frozen drain. Others need a technician before the water gets into your cabinets or floor.

Common causes (high level)

Water under the fridge is almost never the compressor. Usually the defrost drain has iced shut, the drain pan underneath is cracked or full, or a twist-in water filter wasn’t seated after a change. Ice maker and dispenser lines can drip at the fittings. If the fridge is also warm, it may be melting a lot of frost, so look at the not-cooling guide too.

• Clogged or frozen defrost drain behind the freezer evaporator cover
• Cracked, tipped, or overflowing drain pan under the unit
• Loose, cracked, or incompletely seated water filter housing
• Ice-maker fill tube or water-inlet valve drip at the rear
• Door left ajar or failed gasket causing excess frost that later melts
• Blocked condensate path after a recent move or leveling change

Safe checks you can do before calling

These are look-and-check steps only. Don’t open live electrical panels, sealed refrigerant lines or pressurized water valves under the cabinet:

• Note whether water is under the front toe-kick, behind the fridge, or pooling on an interior shelf.
• Empty and inspect the drip tray or drain pan if your model makes it reachable from the front without tools. Do not tip a loaded fridge alone.
• If you recently changed the filter, confirm it is fully locked; wipe dry and watch for a slow seep after a few hours.
• Check that the fridge sits level enough that doors close on their own; wipe crumbs from the gasket.
• Turn off the ice maker at the control if the leak is clearly at the ice room, and catch drips with towels until a tech arrives.

Do not puncture lines, cut into water tubing under pressure, add sealant to refrigerant joints, or open sealed electrical compartments. If you see scorch marks near the water valve, hear constant inlet-valve buzz with floor wetting, or smell burning insulation, shut off the water supply and power if safe and call a pro.

Call when puddles return after wipe-downs, food compartments warm while frost melts heavily, the filter or ice-maker area keeps weeping, water reaches flooring or cabinets, or the leak started after a filter change or ice-maker install.
