Dryer Takes Forever to Dry

If the dryer gets warm but towels still come out damp after a full cycle, the problem is usually airflow, not heat. Wet, warm air has to leave the dryer to get the clothes dry. When it can’t get out, the dryer just runs longer. If the dryer is cold, with no heat at all, see Dryer Not Heating.

Why it’s so common in the San Francisco Bay Area

  • Long vent runs in older buildings. In a lot of San Francisco flats and Peninsula homes, the laundry was added later. The vent runs through a garage, under a floor or up through the roof, with several turns. Every turn and every extra foot cuts airflow.
  • Plastic or foil flex duct behind the dryer. It crushes when the dryer is pushed back, and the ridges catch lint.
  • Stacked units in closets. Tight spaces mean kinked ducts and little room for air.
  • Fog and damp air near the coast. It doesn’t stop a dryer, but a weak vent makes it more noticeable.

Quick checks you can do

  1. Clean the lint screen, then vacuum the slot it sits in.
  2. Go outside while the dryer runs. You should feel a strong, warm push of air at the vent hood, and the flap should open. Weak air means a blocked or crushed duct.
  3. Look behind the dryer for kinked or crushed duct.
  4. Make sure the washer is spinning the water out. Soaking-wet loads make any dryer look slow.
  5. If you use dryer sheets, wipe the two metal sensor bars inside the drum with rubbing alcohol. Residue on them can make Auto Dry stop early or run long.

When it’s a part, not the vent

If airflow is strong and it’s still slow, it can be a heating element that’s partly failed, a cycling thermostat, or a gas igniter or valve that cuts out mid-cycle. We test those on the visit.

What we do

We check airflow at the dryer and at the outside hood, then test the heat side. We’ll tell you if it’s a vent job or a dryer repair, and give you the price before we start.
