LG Refrigerator Error Codes

Short answer: most LG refrigerator codes name a fan or a sensor. FF is the freezer fan, rF the fridge fan, IF the ice maker fan and CF the condenser fan. dH is the defrost system. Frost around a fan is the usual reason FF and rF appear, and LG’s fix is a long unplugged defrost. CH and CL point to the sealed refrigerant system and need a technician.

How the code shows up

LG codes usually start with Er, E or r, so FF may read “Er FF” or “E FF” on the temperature display. Models without a digital display light up a pattern of temperature LEDs instead; LG publishes the patterns for those.

One display that looks like a fault but isn’t: OF F, or a fridge that has power and lights but no cooling, can mean Demo (display) mode is on. On 2018 and older models, LG says to open the right refrigerator door and hold the Refrigerator and Ice Plus buttons together for five seconds, until a second beep. On 2019 and newer models (serial number starting with 901 or higher), LG’s steps are different: open either door, hold Refrigerator, and press Ice Plus three times. Button locations vary by model.

Code What LG says it means What you can do
FF The freezer fan isn’t running. Ice or frost around the motor is the usual cause, often from an overfilled freezer or a door left ajar. Reset power for about 5 minutes. If it returns, do the full defrost below.
rF The fan in the fresh-food section isn’t running. Reset power for about 5 minutes. If it returns, book service.
IF The ice maker fan isn’t working right. LG says a blockage in the fan affects ice making. Request service. Ice making slows or stops until it’s fixed.
CF The condenser fan at the back, near the compressor, has failed or lost its connection. Request service. Keep the back of the fridge clear so air can move.
dH Defrost fault: the defrost sensor didn’t warm up enough within 80 minutes of defrost starting. LG lists a broken defrost heater or thermal fuse, a bad relay, or a clogged drain. Request service. A manual defrost buys time but won’t fix it.
FS, rS, dS A temperature sensor fault in the freezer, fridge or defrost circuit. Request service.
gF The water flow sensor isn’t reading right: a closed valve, a kinked line or the wrong pressure. Open the water valve fully and straighten the line behind the fridge.
CH, CL A refrigerant leak on the high or low pressure side of the sealed system. Request service. This is sealed-system work.

The long defrost LG recommends for FF

When frost locks a fan, LG’s fix is to melt it out with the power off. Here’s how we’d do it:

  1. Move food into a cooler or a spare fridge.
  2. Unplug the refrigerator, or switch off its breaker.
  3. Prop both doors wide open and leave them. LG’s guidance runs from 8 hours to a full day, and up to three days in winter. In a cold San Francisco kitchen, plan on the longer end.
  4. Lay towels down and mop up meltwater as it comes.
  5. Plug it back in. LG says it can take 24 to 48 hours to get fully cold again.

Don’t chip ice off the fan with a knife or point a heat gun at the plastic liner. Both cost more than the original repair.

If FF comes back after a defrost

A defrost removes the ice, not the reason it formed. If FF or IF returns within days or weeks, something is letting frost build: a door gasket that doesn’t seal, a defrost heater or sensor that has failed, or a blocked defrost drain. That’s when a dH code often shows up too. That’s a repair, not a reason to replace the fridge.

Warnings, not faults

Lo means the room is very cold and HI means it’s very hot, both outside the range LG designs for. A fridge in an unheated garage can show these.

When to call

  • CF, dH, CH, CL, FS, rS or dS: LG says to request service for these
  • FF, rF or IF comes back after a power reset and a full defrost
  • The fresh-food side is above 40°F or the freezer is softening
  • You hear a fan scraping ice, or see frost on the back wall of the freezer

Common questions

How do I fix Er FF on my LG refrigerator?

Start with a power reset: unplug it or switch off the breaker for about five minutes. If FF comes back, frost is probably locking the freezer fan. Empty the freezer, unplug the fridge and leave the doors open for at least 8 hours, longer in cold weather. If FF returns after that, the defrost system needs a technician.

Can I reset an LG refrigerator error code?

A five-minute power reset clears some codes, and LG suggests it for FF and rF. It won't fix a failed fan, sensor or heater. If the same code returns within a day or two, have it diagnosed before food starts to warm.

Is Er CH serious on an LG fridge?

Yes. LG says CH points to a refrigerant leak on the high pressure side of the sealed system, and CL to the low side. Neither is a homeowner fix. Keep the doors shut, move important food to a cooler if it starts warming, and book a technician.

Why does my LG fridge say OF F?

That usually means Demo or display mode, which turns cooling off for showroom use. On older models, LG says to open the right door and hold Refrigerator and Ice Plus together for five seconds. On 2019 and newer models, hold Refrigerator and press Ice Plus three times. Your manual shows where the buttons are on your model.
