Common causes (high level)

Warm cabinets rarely mean “the compressor is dead” on the first look. Many Bay Area units fail to cool because coils are packed with dust, vents are blocked by overloaded shelves, door gaskets leak cold air, or the defrost system has iced over the evaporator. Electronic controls and temperature sensors can also drift after a power blip. Sealed-system leaks and compressor faults do happen, but those require professional gauges and recovery equipment — not a weekend DIY attempt.

  • Dirty condenser coils or blocked rear/side airflow
  • Overloaded shelves blocking cold-air vents between fridge and freezer
  • Door ajar, warped gasket, or frequent long door openings
  • Defrost heater, sensor, or control board faults causing ice on the evaporator
  • Failed evaporator fan, condenser fan, start relay, or temperature control
  • Low refrigerant or sealed-system issues (pro diagnosis only)

Safe checks you can do before calling

These are observation steps only — not repairs inside live electrical panels or sealed refrigerant circuits:

  • Confirm the unit is plugged in and the wall outlet has power; check the breaker if the interior light is also out.
  • Verify temperature controls are not set to Off or an unusually warm setting.
  • Clear vents between the freezer and fresh-food section; give the cabinet space from the wall so coils can breathe.
  • Feel the door gasket for obvious gaps; wipe crumbs that keep the door from sealing.
  • Listen for the evaporator fan (inside freezer) and condenser fan (near coils) when the compressor is running.

Do not puncture lines, add refrigerant, bypass safety switches, or open sealed electrical compartments. If you smell burning insulation, see scorched wiring, or hear hard clicking from the compressor area, unplug if safe and call a pro.

When to call for refrigerator repair

Call when food is warming despite normal settings, frost builds heavily on the evaporator cover, the compressor never starts or short-cycles, water pools under the unit from a blocked drain, or the fridge warms again within hours of a temporary “recovery.” Same-day weekday windows are often available depending on route and location — we do not claim or overnight coverage.
