Should I repair or replace my refrigerator?

Repair it if the fridge is under about 10 years old and the repair costs less than half the price of a comparable new one. That’s the 50% rule used by Angi, HomeGuide and most cost guides. Built-in refrigerators are the main exception: replacing one often means cabinet and panel work, so they’re usually worth fixing even when they’re older.

The quick math

Angi’s 2026 data puts most refrigerator repairs at $150 to $400 and new refrigerators at $1,000 to $3,000. HomeGuide lists the most expensive common repair, a compressor, at $700 to $1,250.

Two examples (made-up numbers, not quotes):

  • A 6-year-old French-door fridge needs a $300 fan motor repair. A similar new fridge costs about $2,000. That’s 15% of the new price, so repair it.
  • A 14-year-old top-freezer fridge needs a $900 compressor. A similar new one costs about $1,200. That’s 75%, and the fridge is past most of its life. Replace it.

Most standard refrigerators last 10 to 15 years, according to the cost guides Google’s AI Overview cited in October 2026.

Repairs that are almost always worth it

These parts fail often and the rest of the fridge is usually fine:

  • Evaporator and condenser fan motors
  • Defrost heaters, thermostats and sensors
  • Door gaskets
  • Water valves, filter housings and ice makers
  • Clogged defrost drains

In our experience, most warm-fridge calls end up being one of these, not the compressor.

When to start looking at a new fridge

  • The compressor or sealed system has failed on a standard fridge that’s 10 years or older.
  • It’s the second or third big repair in a couple of years.
  • The parts are discontinued.
  • The repair is more than half the price of a comparable new fridge.

Why built-ins are different

A Sub-Zero, Thermador or other built-in fits the cabinets around it. Our techs are factory trained on these brands. Replacing it can mean new panels, trim and sometimes cabinet changes, on top of a high price. Angi puts built-in repairs at $300 to $700. Even sealed-system work, which ran $1,400 to $2,800 in the cost guides Google cited in October 2026, is often the better deal next to replacing a built-in. What we do on a repair-or-replace call

We find what actually failed, explain it, and give you the exact repair price before any work starts. Then you decide. We use OEM parts, qualifying repairs come with 90 days on parts and labor, and our technicians are EPA 608 certified for sealed-system work. The visit starts with a $219 service call, free if you go with the repair.

Things to check before you decide

  • Is the condenser coil clean and the grille clear? Dust alone can make a fridge run warm.
  • Is the door sealing all the way around?
  • Has the breaker tripped?

Our refrigerator not cooling and refrigerator leaking water guides walk through the safe checks. Error codes are covered for Samsung and LG fridges. For other appliances, see is appliance repair worth the cost?

Common questions

What is the 50% rule for refrigerators?
If the repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new fridge and the fridge is about 10 years old or more, replacing it usually makes more sense. If it’s younger and the repair is under half, repair it.

How long does a refrigerator last?
Most standard refrigerators last about 10 to 15 years, according to the national cost guides we’ve read.

Is it worth replacing a refrigerator compressor?
On a newer fridge or a built-in, often yes. On a standard fridge that’s 10 years or older, a compressor job often costs more than half of a new fridge, so replacement usually wins.

Will you tell me if my fridge isn’t worth fixing?
Yes. We explain what failed and give you the exact repair price before any work starts, so you can decide whether repair makes sense.
