Palo Alto dryers live in two very different kinds of houses. The older homes in Old Palo Alto, Professorville and Crescent Park often have the laundry in a basement or a converted back porch. The Eichlers in Greenmeadow, Fairmeadow and the Midtown tracts have no basement at all, so the dryer sits in the garage or an interior closet and the vent runs through a wall or straight up through a flat roof.
Those long and vertical vent runs are the reason so many Palo Alto dryers run long. Lint settles where the duct turns, the dryer overheats, and the thermal fuse or the heating element gives out.
We come out to Old Palo Alto, Professorville, Crescent Park, Community Center, Midtown, Barron Park, College Terrace, Greenmeadow, Charleston Meadows and the rest of Palo Alto.
Common dryer problems we fix in Palo Alto
Clothes still damp after a full cycle
Most often a restricted vent. If the vent is clear, we check the heating element on an electric dryer or the igniter and gas valve coils on a gas dryer.
Drum turns but there is no heat
A blown thermal fuse, a failed element or a bad high-limit thermostat. A fuse that blows again usually means the vent is blocked, so we check both.
Dryer will not start
A door switch, a thermal fuse or the start switch. On newer dryers it can be the control board.
Squealing or thumping
Worn drum rollers, an idler pulley or a stretched belt. These are common on dryers that run every day for a family.
Before you call
Pull the lint screen and clean it, then check the outside vent hood while the dryer runs. You should feel strong, warm air. If the flow is weak, the vent is the likely problem. On a gas dryer, also make sure the gas valve behind the dryer is open.

Dryer repair questions
How much does dryer repair cost in Palo Alto?
Dryer repairs start from $275 for parts and labor. The final price depends on the brand, model and part. The $219 service call is free if you go ahead with the repair.
Do you fix gas and electric dryers?
Yes. We repair both. Gas dryers usually need an igniter or valve coils; electric dryers usually need an element, a fuse or a thermostat.
My Eichler dryer vents through the roof. Is that a problem?
Not by itself, but long vertical runs collect lint faster. If your dryer runs long, we check the vent airflow along with the dryer.
Do you install new dryers?
No. We repair dryers in homes and do not install new ones. Residential service only.
