GE Refrigerator Not Cooling
When a GE fridge runs but food will not stay cold
GE refrigerators — including Profile, French-door, and bottom-freezer cabinets common in San Francisco and Daly City kitchens — can hum along while the fresh-food section drifts warm. Sometimes the freezer still holds ice; other times both compartments lose temperature together. It is a weekday call we see often — not automatically a dead compressor. Airflow, defrost, fans, and controls fail more often than a sealed system on first look.
Bay Appliance Repair diagnoses GE refrigerator not-cooling symptoms Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We dispatch from 140 San Pedro Rd, Daly City, CA 94014 (Bay Appliance Repair). Service calls only — no walk-in parts counter. Call 415-585-5900 or email service@bayappliancerepair.com. California BEAR #46247.
GE cooling issues we see (high level)
Many GE and GE Profile cabinets share evaporator-fan, damper, and adaptive-defrost designs. Dust-packed condenser coils behind or under the unit starve heat rejection. A stuck damper can leave the fridge warm while the freezer stays icy. Heavy frost on the evaporator cover usually points to a defrost heater, sensor, or control fault rather than a guess at refrigerant. Door-in-door and ice/water dispensers add gasket and usage heat that older top-freezer models did not have to fight.
- Dirty condenser coils or blocked cabinet clearance in tight Bay Area kitchens
- Evaporator fan not moving air from freezer to fresh-food section
- Air damper stuck closed or control not calling for fridge cooling
- Defrost failure icing the evaporator (frost behind the freezer panel)
- Warped gaskets, a door that will not square, or frequent long openings
- Start relay, condenser fan, or sealed-system faults (pro diagnosis only)

Safe checks before a GE service call
These are observation steps only. Do not puncture refrigerant lines, add gas, or open live electrical compartments:
- Confirm the outlet has power and the interior light still works; check the breaker if the cabinet is fully dead.
- Verify temperature controls are not set to Off or a vacation/warm mode.
- Clear vents between freezer and fridge; pull the cabinet a few inches from the wall so coils can breathe.
- Feel gaskets for gaps; wipe crumbs that keep a French door from sealing.
- Listen for the freezer evaporator fan when the compressor is running, and for a condenser fan near the coils.
Do not bypass safety switches, jump relays with improvised wire, or “recharge” the sealed system. If you smell burning insulation, see scorched wiring, or hear hard clicking at the compressor, unplug if it is safe and call a technician.
When to call for GE refrigerator repair
Book a weekday visit when food warms despite normal settings, frost builds behind the evaporator cover, the compressor never starts or short-cycles, water pools from a blocked defrost drain, or cooling returns only briefly after a reset. Same-day weekday service is often available by route.

What a weekday GE diagnosis covers
We confirm which compartment is warm, inspect coils and fans, check damper and defrost behavior on GE platforms, and explain options before ordering parts. Many not-cooling GE cabinets recover without a full replacement when the liner and sealed system are sound. Bay Appliance Repair is EPA 608 certified (Type I and II) and licensed under California BEAR #46247.
