A dryer that finishes the timer but leaves towels damp — or needs two and three cycles to dry a normal load — is one of the most common laundry complaints across San Francisco apartments and Bay Area homes. Common causes (high level)
Slow drying is often an airflow problem first. Crushed flex duct, lint-packed transitions, long concealed runs, and stuck exterior hoods choke exhaust so heat trips early or never builds. Electric units may cycle a weak element; gas units may light briefly then drop flame when airflow or ignition parts are marginal. Moisture sensors coated with fabric softener film can also keep “Auto” cycles running long after the load is only mostly dry.
- Clogged lint screen, blower housing, or exterior vent hood
- Crushed, oversized, or excessively long dryer duct with poor airflow
- Weak heating element, cycling thermostat, or thermal cutoffs (electric)
- Intermittent igniter, flame sensor, or gas valve coil issues (gas — pro only)
- Coated moisture sensor bars fooling auto-dry logic
- Overloaded loads, low spin from the washer, or mixed heavy items

Safe checks — and what not to DIY
Stay with external, unpowered checks. Gas valves, igniters, 240V elements, and internal wiring belong to a licensed technician:
- Clean the lint filter before every load; vacuum lint from the filter housing opening if accessible without tools.
- Confirm the exterior vent flap opens freely when the dryer runs and is not packed with lint or nesting.
- Feel whether warm air exits outdoors with decent force; weak or cool exhaust suggests a restricted path.
- Try one smaller cotton load on Timed Dry and note minutes-to-dry versus Auto cycles that never end.
- For electric units, verify both breakers on a double-pole circuit are on; for gas units, confirm the shutoff behind the dryer is fully open — do not dismantle gas fittings.
Call a pro — do not DIY: opening sealed burner boxes, testing gas igniters, replacing gas valve coils, jumping thermostats, or probing live 240V terminals. Fire and carbon monoxide risks are real. If you smell gas or scorching lint, shut the dryer off, leave the area if needed, and contact your gas utility / a qualified technician — do not keep running long heat cycles into a blocked vent.
