A dryer that tumbles but never heats stretches laundry day and can point to airflow, ignition, element, or control faults. Common causes (high level)

Electric dryers may lose heat from an open heating element, thermal fuse, high-limit thermostat, or cycling thermostat. Gas dryers may spark without flame, or fail to open the gas valve when coils, igniter, flame sensor, or control signals fail. Both fuel types suffer when the exhaust vent is crushed, lint-packed, or terminated poorly — restricted airflow causes long dry times and repeated thermal trips.

  • Clogged lint screen, internal duct, or exterior vent hood
  • Open heating element (electric) or weak/failed igniter (gas)
  • Blown thermal fuse or faulty thermostats after overheating
  • Gas valve coils or flame sensor faults (gas — pro only)
  • Moisture sensor or control board not calling for heat
  • Incorrect supply: tripped breaker, loose cord, or gas shutoff partially closed

Safe checks — and what not to DIY

Stay with external, unpowered checks. Gas valves, igniters, 240V elements, and internal wiring belong to a licensed technician:

  • Clean the lint filter before every load; vacuum lint from the filter housing opening if accessible without tools.
  • Confirm the exterior vent flap opens when the dryer runs and is not packed with lint or bird nesting.
  • Feel whether any warm air exits outdoors; little or no exhaust suggests a restricted vent path.
  • For electric units, verify both breakers for a double-pole circuit are on; for gas units, confirm the gas shutoff behind the dryer is fully open — do not dismantle gas fittings.
  • Note whether the dryer is completely cold or faintly warm after a long timed cycle.

Call a pro — do not DIY: testing gas igniters, replacing gas valve coils, opening sealed burner boxes, jumping thermostats, or probing live 240V terminals. Fire and carbon monoxide risks are real. If you smell gas, shut off the dryer, leave the area if needed, and contact your gas utility / a qualified technician — do not keep trying ignition.
