Washer Not Spinning
When the wash finishes but clothes stay soaked
A washer that fills or agitates but won’t spin leaves you with heavy, dripping loads and holds up the rest of the laundry. It’s usually the lid or door lock, an unbalanced load, a belt or drive problem, or a drain problem that keeps it from going into a fast spin. It isn’t always the motor.
We fix washers that won’t spin, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We work out of 140 San Pedro Rd, Daly City, CA 94014, and come to you. Call (415) 585-5900 or email service@bayappliancerepair.com. California BEAR #46247.
Common causes (high level)
Newer front-loaders and top-loaders won’t spin if a lock, the balance sensor or a drain fault stops them. Older belt-drive washers slip or break a belt. Direct-drive machines get clutch, shifter or control problems. Something hard in the tub, coins in the pump or a kinked drain hose can also stop the spin partway.
- Lid switch or door lock not confirming “closed”
- Unbalanced or overloaded load; machine retries then stops
- Drain pump clog, foreign object, or slow drain delaying spin
- Drive belt, clutch, coupler, or motor issues
- Control board, rotor position sensor, or wiring faults
- Shock absorbers or suspension allowing tub slap that cancels spin

Safe checks before a service call
Keep these checks simple. Unplug the washer before moving any panel, and never bypass the door lock or cut into live wiring:
- Redistribute a single heavy item (rug, comforter) that may be throwing the tub off balance; try a smaller, evenly spaced load.
- Confirm the lid or door fully latches; clean debris from the latch area.
- Listen for the drain pump at the end of the wash; standing water left in the tub often blocks spin.
- Check that the drain hose is not kinked and that the standpipe is not overflowing.
- Note any error codes on the display before power-cycling once.
Do not remove the cabinet to “test” the motor with improvised jumpers, and do not force a spin with the door lock defeated. Those shortcuts create shock and flood risks. If the machine smells of burning rubber or the breaker trips, stop and call a technician.

Common questions
How do I reset my washing machine to spin?
Unplug the washer briefly to reset the control, then plug it back in and choose a drain-and-spin or spin-only cycle. Before that, make sure the lid or door latches fully, the load is balanced, and no water is standing in the tub. If it still won't spin, note any error code and call for a diagnosis.
Does unplugging a washer reset it?
Often, yes. Unplugging the washer briefly lets the control board reset, which can clear a stuck cycle or a temporary error. Write down any error code first, then plug it back in and run a drain-and-spin cycle. If it still won't spin or drain, the door lock, drain pump, belt or motor likely needs a technician.
What are the signs that my washing machine motor is going bad?
Warning signs include humming without agitating or spinning, a burning smell, a drum that spins slowly or stops mid-cycle, and a tripping breaker. Many of these symptoms actually come from a door lock, drain pump, belt or control board fault, so have it diagnosed before assuming the motor has failed. Unplug it if you smell burning.
