Gas Stove Won’t Light

Clicking burners, no flame, and cooktop ignition faults

A gas burner that clicks and won’t light, or only lights with a match, is a common call from San Francisco flats to Daly City and the Peninsula. Sometimes one burner sparks forever, sometimes only a few light, and sometimes the top is dead while the oven still works. The cause is usually food on the igniter, a weak spark module, a crooked burner cap, or a gas supply or valve problem. Gas work is not a DIY job.

We fix gas stoves that won’t light, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We work out of 140 San Pedro Rd, Daly City, CA 94014, and come to you. Call (415) 585-5900 or email service@bayappliancerepair.com. California BEAR #46247.

Common causes (high level)

When a burner won’t light, it usually starts at the igniter and burner head. Grease bridges the ceramic tip, a cap sits crooked after cleaning, or the spark module fires weakly or not at all. If every burner clicks when you turn one knob, an igniter may be shorting. Less often, a half-closed shutoff, a clogged orifice or a failed gas valve blocks the gas even with a good spark. Oven ignition is a separate problem.

  • Wet, greasy, or cracked spark igniter tip on a surface burner
  • Burner cap or head misaligned after cleaning
  • Failed spark module, switched harness, or weak electrode gap
  • Gas shutoff partially closed or supply interruption (pro / utility)
  • Clogged burner ports or orifice from spillover (pro cleaning path)
  • Oven igniter or safety valve faults when only the cavity will not light (pro only)

Safe checks, and what not to DIY

Stay with cool, unpowered observation of caps and knobs. Gas valves, orifices, regulators, and sealed burner boxes belong to a licensed technician:

  • Confirm the range gas shutoff behind or beside the unit is fully open. Do not dismantle fittings or flex connectors.
  • With burners cool, reseat each burner cap so it sits flat and centered; wipe obvious grease from the ceramic igniter tip with a dry cloth only.
  • Note whether you hear rapid clicking and see a blue spark at the igniter when a knob is held in Light.
  • Try another burner: one dead port versus all burners dead helps separate local debris from module or supply issues.
  • If the oven also will not light, write down any error codes and stop repeated ignition attempts.

Don’t do these yourself: adjusting gas pressure, drilling orifices, replacing gas valves, opening sealed burner boxes, or testing with an open flame near fittings. Fire and carbon monoxide are real risks. If you smell gas, turn the range off, leave if you need to, and call your gas utility or a qualified technician. Don’t keep clicking the igniter into a strong gas smell.

When to call for stove / range repair

Book service when burners click without flame, only some burners light, you smell gas during ignition attempts, sparks jump to the wrong parts, or the cooktop worked until a deep clean moved caps. Same-day appointments are often available by route. Hours are Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm.

In San Francisco, book through San Francisco stove, range, and cooktop repair. If it’s the oven that won’t heat, see oven not heating and San Francisco oven repair.

What diagnosis looks like

We check spark and gas at each burner, look at the igniters and caps, and tell you straight whether to repair or replace. An igniter, spark module or burner head fixes many of these when the gas valve and lines are fine. Licensed under California BEAR #46247, with appointments Monday to Friday.
