A gas stove or cooktop that clicks without lighting — or lights only with a match — is a common kitchen call from San Francisco flats to Daly City and Peninsula homes. Surface burners may spark endlessly, light on only some knobs, or stay cold while the oven still works. Ignition problems mix food debris on igniters, weak spark modules, misaligned burner caps, and gas-supply or valve issues. Gas appliances are not safe DIY fuel projects.

Common causes (high level)
Most weekday surface-burner no-light findings start at the spark igniter and burner head: grease bridges the ceramic tip, a cap sits crooked after cleaning, or the spark module fires weakly or not at all. A range that clicks on every burner when one knob is pressed can point to a grounded igniter path. Less often, a partially closed shutoff, clogged orifice, or failed gas valve blocks fuel even when spark looks healthy. Oven ignition is a related but separate path.

- Failed spark module, switched harness, or weak electrode gap
- Gas shutoff partially closed or supply interruption (pro / utility)

Safe checks — and what not to DIY
Stay with cool, unpowered observation of caps and knobs. Gas valves, orifices, regulators, and sealed burner boxes belong to a licensed technician:
- Confirm the range gas shutoff behind or beside the unit is fully open — do not dismantle fittings or flex connectors.
- With burners cool, reseat each burner cap so it sits flat and centered; wipe obvious grease from the ceramic igniter tip with a dry cloth only.
- Note whether you hear rapid clicking and see a blue spark at the igniter when a knob is held in Light.
- Try another burner: one dead port versus all burners dead helps separate local debris from module or supply issues.
- If the oven also will not light, write down any error codes and stop repeated ignition attempts.
Call a pro — do not DIY: adjusting gas pressure, drilling orifices, replacing gas valves, opening sealed burner boxes, or “testing” with an open flame near fittings. Fire and carbon monoxide risks are real. If you smell gas, shut the range off, leave the area if needed, and contact your gas utility / a qualified technician — do not keep clicking igniters into a strong gas odor.
When to call for stove / range repair
Book service when burners click without flame, only some burners light, you smell gas during ignition attempts, sparks jump to the wrong parts, or the cooktop worked until a deep clean moved caps. Weekday same-day appointments are often available by route. We do not advertise overnight coverage.
