Common causes (high level)

Drain problems cluster around filtration, the path to the sink plumbing, and the pump that moves water out. New disposals installed without removing the dishwasher knockout plug are a classic Bay Area setup fault. Air gaps on the counter can clog with sludge. Control or float-switch faults are less common but do appear on higher-cycle counts.

  • Food or glass in the drain pump impeller
  • Kinked or grease-filled drain hose

  • Garbage disposal knockout plug still in place after a new disposal install

Safe checks you can try

These tips stay on the user-accessible side of the machine. Unplug or switch off the dishwasher breaker before removing filters. Do not put hands near a running pump or disposal:

  • Remove and rinse the filter per your manual; clear visible debris from the sump.
  • Run the garbage disposal with water to clear shared drain lines; confirm the disposal knockout was removed if the dishwasher is newly tied in.
  • Check the air gap (small chrome/plastic cap on the sink deck) for sludge if your sink has one.
  • Look under the sink for a sharply kinked dishwasher drain hose.
  • Note whether the unit hummed during drain or never tried to pump out.

Do not hardwire jumper tests, dismantle sealed pump housings under power, or force chemical cleaners into electrical compartments. If water is leaking onto the floor near outlets, cut power at the breaker and call a pro.
