A washing machine that agitates or fills but will not spin leaves heavy, dripping loads and delays the rest of laundry day. Common causes (high level)

Modern front-loaders and top-loaders refuse to spin when safety locks, out-of-balance sensors, or drain faults trip. Older belt-drive units may slip or break a belt; direct-drive machines may show clutch, shifter, or control faults. Cobalt-hard objects in the tub, coins in the pump, or a kinked drain hose can also stop spin mid-cycle.

  • Lid switch or door lock not confirming “closed”
  • Unbalanced or overloaded load; machine retries then stops
  • Drain pump clog, foreign object, or slow drain delaying spin
  • Drive belt, clutch, coupler, or motor issues
  • Control board, rotor position sensor, or wiring faults
  • Shock absorbers or suspension allowing tub slap that cancels spin

Safe checks before a service call

Keep these checks non-invasive — unplug the washer before moving panels, and never bypass door locks or cut into live wiring:

  • Redistribute a single heavy item (rug, comforter) that may be throwing the tub off balance; try a smaller, evenly spaced load.
  • Confirm the lid or door fully latches; clean debris from the latch area.
  • Listen for the drain pump at the end of the wash; standing water left in the tub often blocks spin.
  • Check that the drain hose is not kinked and that the standpipe is not overflowing.
  • Note any error codes on the display before power-cycling once.

Do not remove the cabinet to “test” the motor with improvised jumpers, and do not force a spin with the door lock defeated. Those shortcuts create shock and flood risks. If the machine smells of burning rubber or the breaker trips, stop and call a technician.
